The floods have lifted up, O LORD,

the floods have lifted up their voice;

the floods lift up their roaring.

More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,

more majestic than the waves of the sea,

majestic on high is the LORD!

Your decrees are very sure;

holiness befits your house,

O LORD, forevermore.

The psalm opens with a proclamation that God is king and he is royally robed. It then digresses to tell the story of how God came to be established as king of the universe. We are told that God’s kingship is linked to his act of creating and stabilizing the world. The psalm fills in this story by noting an alternate creation story than one finds in Genesis, where the matter God deals with is totally passive. Psalm 93 likely draws from the Babylonian creation myth of Marduk’s conquest over his watery opponent, Tiamat the sea dragon, and portrays God as having subdued the primordial waters. And just as the Babylonian creation story reports that after creating the world a temple was built for Marduk, so Psalm 93 reports that God is securely ensconced in his house, which is simply another word for his temple. One finds very similar imagery in other psalms, such as Psalm 29, where in verse 10 we are told that: “The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; / the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.”
